MacShane: Human rights should be protected through Cyprus settlement

    By Kyriakos Tsioupras

London, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The promotion and protection of human rights in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus would be best achieved through a comprehensive settlement on the basis of the UN plan, British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane has said.

    Memorials to mark invasion anniversary

Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- With memorial services to be held in all churches in the government-controlled areas on Sunday Cyprus will honour all those killed during the Turkish invasion of 20 July 1974.

The official memorial service will be held in Nicosia at the presence of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias.

The wailing of sirens will be heard, once again, at 5.30 local time, the very time when the Turkish invasion was launched 29 years ago. Flags will fly at half-mast while church bells will toll midday mournfully for 15 minutes in every single church.

President Papadopoulos will lay a wreath at the Makedonitissa Tomb, where soldiers killed during the invasion were buried. An official delegation from Greece will also attend the ceremony.
