United Nations, Ìar 4 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will brief later today the members of UN Security Council over the outcome of his recent three-nation trip that took him to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, in relation to a Cyprus settlement.

Nicosia, Mar 4 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson announced here today the launch in Cyprus of the "Rewards for Justice Programme", which is a new tool in the international war on terrorism.

Turkish Cypriot couple finds work and prosperity in free areas

Larnaca, Mar 4 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot Marios Athanasiou, would put in a ten-hour shift daily as waiter in a hotel in the Turkish occupied north, for four years, ending up with meager monthly salary of 100 pounds. It was almost impossible to maintain himself, let alone get married. The story however has a happy ending.

Marios, or Mercen, as he was called before being baptized, met his wife in the occupied north of Cyprus and the two lived there together for one and a half years. When the hotel faced financial problems, he was dismissed without any compensation or his social security installments paid.

So four months ago, he crossed to the free areas of the Republic with his wife and began working at construction sites.

Nicosia, Mar 4 (CNA) -- Mechtild Rothe, who co-chairs the Joint European Union - Cyprus Parliamentary Committee, said that Cyprus was the only one from the EU acceding countries to begin preparing a law on renewable energies.

Papadopoulos hopes there is still room for changes in UN plan

Nicosia, Mar 4 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos expressed the hope that there is room for changes in the third Annan plan on issues, which the Greek Cypriot side is raising.

Speaking after a meeting here Tuesday with UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, attended by the members of the Greek Cypriot Negotiating Team at the UN-led talks for Cyprus, Papadopoulos said he would meet de Soto again on Wednesday afternoon.

With or without solution Cyprus will accede EU, says Verheugen

Brussels, Mar 4 (CNA) Enlargement Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, made it clear that with or without a settlement Cyprus is expected to accede to the European Union (EU) by 1 May 2004.

Speaking at an enlargement seminar with UK parliamentarians in London, Verheugen said a settlement ''would also bring peace and stability to Cyprus and the whole region and urged both parties to seize this unique opportunity noting it will not come back.
