UN chief's new proposal expected this week

    by Maria Myles

Athens, Feb 24 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan intends to put forward to the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides a new peace proposal on a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus during his visit to the island, beginning Wednesday, well informed sources have told CNA.

The new plan is likely to be handed to the two sides this Thursday, the sources said, pointing out that the plan should be negotiated by the two sides.

''Kofi Annan does not want to leave Cyprus empty handed, he wishes to see some result coming out of his contacts with the two sides,'' the same sources said, adding that a memorandum the UN communicated to the two sides on Sunday will have a bearing on Annan's new plan.
