We must welcome the statement made by the American Undersecretary. Turkey must realise that it is incomprehensible to hold accession negotiations with the European Union and not recognise an EU member state, the Republic of Cyprus, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides told reporters here Tuesday. He said, we must all realise that the Cyprus problem should be solved before the start of the accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU. In an interview on Monday to the Turkish daily Sabah, Grossman said that the Annan plan was the last chance for Cyprus. He also said the US will not support an agreement which will bring the pre-1974 period in Cyprus. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the islands territory. UN-led direct talks continue in an effort to reach a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, based on the UN Secretary-General's revised plan, by the end of February, so that Cyprus can sign the EU Accession Treaty in April as a reunited island.
