Clerides has lengthy meeting with UN SG's adviser on Cyprus

Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides and UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto had a three hour long meeting here today.

It was the first step in an effort by the UN to incorporate into the Secretary General Kofi Annan's proposal for a Cyprus settlement, presented November 11, comments by the leaders of the two communities and to come up with a single text that both could agree to by 12 December, when the Copenhagen European Council is due to begin.

Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash both delivered their comments in writing to the UN last Thursday. They were given copies of the respective positions of the other side by the UN.

Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) -- The UN is very likely to present the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides with a revised proposal on a political settlement before next week's European Union summit, which begins Thursday, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today.
