Cyprus condemns UDI anniversary in occupied territory

Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus leadership, political organisations students and pupils condemn once more the unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) by the Turkish Cypriots, on 15 November 1983, branded ''legally invalid'' by the United Nations.

The 19th anniversary of the pseudostate coincides with the UN Secretary-General's plan for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Students and pupils march this morning to the Ledra Palace check point in Nicosia, near the UN-controlled buffer zone, calling upon the international community to exert all influence on Turkey and on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to comply with the UN relevant resolutions on Cyprus, as they protest the 19th anniversary since the Turkish Cypriots set up their self-styled regime in the Turkish occupied northern part of the island.

Political parties and other groups have issued statements denouncing the Turkish secessionist act and vowed to struggle for the island's unity.

The Turkish Cypriot UDI was declared ''legally invalid'' by UN Security Council resolution 541 of November 1983, which has called on all states not to recognise the self-styled regime and not to facilitate it in any way.
