Kofi Annan unsure about submitting ideas on Cyprus

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Nov 9 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan continues to keep his cards close to his chest with regard to his next moves on Cyprus, in spite of increasing speculation that he intends to present the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides with a detailed plan for a solution.

''I told you the other time that when I make up my mind, first you will know and then we will tell you,'' Annan told the press.

Vessel to carry copper to Greece for Athens 2004 Games

Limassol, Nov 8 (CNA) In a grand ceremony on Sunday, the Kyrenia-Freedom ship, which on a symbolic trip recalling the role of Cyprus as a copper exporting centre in ancient times is to carry copper to Greece for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, will be launched.

Greek Minister of Merchant Marine Giorgos Anomeritis, arrived on the island here Friday to attend Sundays ceremony. A delegation from the Athens 2004 Organizing Committee was also expected.

Kyrenia Mayor Constantinos Orologas told a press conference earlier this week that the replica of the ancient Greek vessel, which associates the history and traditions of Hellenism from the time of Alexander the Great until today, would transport copper from Cyprus to Greece, as a gift from Cyprus.

The copper will be used during construction for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The original Kyrenia ship was built in the early 4th century B.C. and is the oldest Greek vessel ever discovered.

UN solution plan to be handed probably Monday, says Minister

Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides believes that it is highly likely that a UN proposal on a solution to the Cyprus question will be handed to the government on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister said the government has not seen any drafts of the proposed plan but has taken precautionary action to avert any unwanted elements in the text.

Kasoulides explained that the President's stated preference to have such a plan put forward once the election campaign is over has nothing to do with domestic politics but it stresses the President's innermost thought that his primary concern is to find ways to protect in the best possible manner the national interests of the people of Cyprus.
