    Papandreou, Grossman call for Cyprus settlement

    Athens, Nov 4 (CNA) Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and US Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Marc Grossman have said they hoped that the time between now and the December European Council will be utilised in the effort to find a negotiated political settlement in cyprus.

    We hope that this time between now and 12 December would be taken advantage by everyone and that we can come closer and closer to a settlement in Cyprus, said Grossman.

    China supports Cyprus settlement, grants tourist destination status

    Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister, Yang Wenchang, stated here today that his country has always supported the solution of the Cyprus issue through peaceful means according to the relevant UN resolutions, which help maintain the sovereignty and the integrity of Cyprus.

    Speaking after meeting House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, Yang said a peaceful solution will also contribute to regional peace and stability, adding that China welcomes peaceful negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities on the island to find a mutual acceptable, lasting and just solution enabling them in their economic development.

    Annan to meet De Soto on Tuesday

    New York, Nov 4 (CNA) UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will meet Tuesday his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto.

    Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General said here Monday de Soto, who is in New York paid a "social and private" to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, recovering from open heart surgery.

    De Soto will meet Denktashs adviser, Ergun Olgun on Monday and will confer with State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Weston and British Envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay.

    IMF draft report on Cyprus ready

    Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) Cyprus is more advanced in the process of real convergence with the European Union (EU) economic criteria and is actually ahead of other candidate countries and members of the EU, said Gian Maria Milesi-Ferretti, head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, which today concluded a visit to Cyprus.
