    London, Oct 24 (CNA) -- Britain believes that progress has been achieved in the UN-led peace talks on Cyprus and is urging everybody to work ''flat out'' for a political settlement.

    Settlement should be based on UN provisions, says Slovak Ambassador

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- A political settlement in Cyprus should be reached on the basis of UN provisions and ideals, Slovak Ambassador here Jan Varso said here today, advocating at the same time implementation of UN resolutions on the Cyprus issue.

    President Glafcos Clerides told the Ambassador, upon receiving his credentials, that accession to the European Union would open a unique window of opportunity for a settlement.

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) Japans new ambassador to Cyprus, Takashi Nakamoto repeated his countrys support for a peaceful and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and reiterated its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General.

    Receiving his credentials, President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides said the bilateral relationship the two countries enjoy is continuously reinforced and expanded and Japan accounts for a substantial amount of our commercial exchanges.

    British envoy arrives in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) British Envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, arrived on the island this afternoon for a new round of contacts in an effort to find a Cyprus settlement before the Copenhagen European Council.

    The British diplomat did not make any statements on arrival. However he had a brief meeting with Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, who was on his way to Bern, Switzerland.

    CNA has learned that the purpose of de Sotos visit to Switzerland is to participate in a UN committee meeting, and has nothing to do with the Cyprus problem.

    Lord Hannay will have a working breakfast with President Glafcos Clerides tomorrow morning and also meet Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

    UN plan for Cyprus settlement in place, says Solana

    Brussels, Oct 24 (CNA) EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana confirmed today that the UN has put together a plan for a settlement to the Cyprus problem.

    Asked by CNA about prospects for a Cyprus solution before the EU proclaimed Cyprus and nine more European countries under accession at the Copenhagen summit in December, Solana said he had been in touch with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in the last days about Cyprus.

    Mr Annan will make every effort to get a solution before December, Solana said. He noted however that this was very difficult.

    Asked if he was aware of a UN plan that had already been prepared on Cyprus, he answered: ''You want me to say... I will say Yes.''

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) The Cyprus government condemned in the strongest manner the seizure of 700 innocent civilians in a Moscow theatre by Chechen separatists.

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) Norways King Harald expressed his countrys support to a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    The King made the statement while receiving the credentials of Cyprus ambassador to the country, Costas Papademas, also ambassador in Sweden. Papademas informed the Norwegian monarch on Cyprus accession course and extended an invitation by President Glafcos Clerides to visit Cyprus, an official statement said here Thursday.

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides reiterated the Greek Cypriot side remains fully committed in its search for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Receiving the credentials of Lithuanias new ambassador in Nicosia, Alfonsas Eidintas, Clerides said our goal is clear, "to reach a solution based on the UN resolutions on Cyprus and in conformity with the acquis communautaire, which will ensure the prosperity and security of all Cypriots within a re-united Cyprus, a federal Cyprus, free from occupation forces and illegal settlers, where all human rights of all citizens, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will be safeguarded".

    The President praised Lithuania for maintaining a principled and constructive attitude on the Cyprus problem and has extended its valuable support to efforts to reach a just and viable solution.

    On bilateral relations, Clerides said the government attaches particular importance to further strengthen and enhance the close ties of relationship and cooperation that exist between our countries on a full range of issues.

    The President hoped that upon accession of our countries to the EU, hopefully in 2004, this cooperation will be further cemented and expanded.

    Cyprus Presidents message to Annan on 57th UN anniversary

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides assured the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan of Cyprus firm commitment in attaining the lofty principles of the UN.

    In a message here Thursday to Kofi Annan on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of the UN, Clerides thanked the international organisations efforts and the Secretary-Generals personal involvement within the mission of his good offices, towards a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the relevant UN resolutions.

    Rising from the ashes of a destructive world war, the UN has unquestionably succeeded where the previous noble effort of the League of Nations did not, said President Clerides.
