    Greek Cypriot committee begins work

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot members of an ad hoc bilateral technical committee, set up in the context of the UN-led peace process, have begun work, following consultations with the UN peace talks team here, led by Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

    The Greek Cypriot team to the committee is headed by Attorney General Alecos Markides and comprises two other legal experts. The committee will deal with legislation that will be in place, if and when a comprehensive settlement is reached between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides, engaged in direct talks since January this year.

    Cuba wants stronger legal basis with Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cuba wishes for increased ties with Cyprus in the economic and cultural fields and a stronger legal basis to work on. It also believes that Cyprus is in a position to better understand Cuba at the European Union when the country accedes the EU next year.

    Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Angel Dalmau Fernandez, in an interview with CNA during his recent visit to the island, pledged Cubas support to UN resolutions on Cyprus and called for a solution which will be acceptable by the people on the island.

    Cyprus proposes candidate for ICC

    United Nations, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus has put forward its own candidate, the president of the Supreme Court Georgios Pikis, for the post of a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC).

    The proposal was made by the Republic's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, who said that Nicosia believes that the jurisdiction of the ICC should extend over war crimes and crimes against humanity.

    Addressing the Sixth Committee of the UN Assembly on a session for the ''Establishment of the International Criminal Court,'', he said Cyprus anticipates that the effective functioning of the Court will ultimately put an end to the perpetration of heinous crimes.

    President - Top UN envoy discuss ''state of play'' in peace talks

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides and UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto discussed here today the state of play in the ongoing peace talks, plans for the future as well as the functioning of two ad hoc technical committees the two sides will set up with a view to tackle various matters, mostly legal issues, that could be in force once a settlement is reached.

    Speaking after the hour-long meeting, de Soto acknowledged that time is running out for the effort to find a negotiated settlement but stressed that ''all is not lost.''

    He said it was unlikely that the two committees will start working this week and noted that to some extent both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides are making the necessary preparations to start work at the committees.

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side is not prepared to accept absolutely anything that is put forward at the negotiating table, because it has certain safety limits beyond which it cannot go, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed here today.

    The spokesman said that if and when the UN present the two sides to the negotiations with a proposal for a solution, the Greek Cypriot side will examine it thoroughly and taking everything into consideration, will then express an opinion on it.

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the United Nations and the Greek Cypriot side are ready to begin work on the two ad hoc bicommunal committees on technical matters, to be set up in the context of the ongoing UN-led peace talks.

    ''It is impossible to work on our own, if the Turkish Cypriot side refuses to work with us within these committees, then they will cease to exist,'' Papapetrou said, replying to press questions about the effort to set up the committees.

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) Fourteen Spanish journalists and two academics who are on the island participating at a seminar, were shocked when the Turkish Cypriot regime in the occupied north yesterday told them to leave as they were talking with their Turkish Cypriot colleagues.

    The Spanish journalists, who are attending the seminar entitled Spain and Cyprus: facing the challenge of an enlarged EU, taking place with the support of the Cyprus Press and Information Office, the European Commission delegation to Cyprus and the Union of Cyprus Journalists, crossed to the occupied areas yesterday to meet non-governmental organisations and Turkish Cypriot journalists.

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) - The Cyprus government ''strongly condemns the recent terrorist bomb attack in Bali, Indonesia, which led to the tragic death and wounding of hundreds of innocent citizens''.

    An announcement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the government and the people of Cyprus express ''warm and sincere condolences'' to the families, the relatives and the countries of origin of the victims.

    ''With the opportunity of this abominable act, the Cypriot government reaffirms its commitment to the collective struggle to combat and eradicate every kind of terrorism'', the press release concludes.

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) - The Belgian model of a constitution cannot be implemented in its entity in Cyprus, President of the Wallonian Parliament of Brussels, Robert Collignon, has said.

    He was speaking during a fundraiser yesterday, organised by the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) to support his re-election.
