    French President receives credentials of new Cyprus Ambassador

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) French President Jacques Chirac reiterated his country's support in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem and help conclude the Republic's accession to the European Union.

    The French President made the statement at a meeting after he had received the credentials of Cyprus new Ambassador to France, Minas Hadjimichael, at an official ceremony at Champs-Elysee.

    Nicosia, Oct 11 (CNA) The Cyprus economy has shown excellent progress and its greatest achievement is the imminent completion of accession negotiations with the European Union, Finance Minister Takis Klerides has said.

    In a speech Thursday before the House plenary, as he tabled the state budge for 2003, the minister said that all indications are that the economy is expected to do well next year.

    The budget provides for 2,401.400 million pounds in revenue and 3,080.900 million in expenditure, recording a deficit of 679,500 pounds.

    Fiscal deficit is expected to reach 138.9 million and public debt will probably stand at 6,669.9 million.

    Cyprus and EIB sign loan agreements

    Nicosia, Oct 11 (CNA) - Cyprus and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed here today three long-term loan agreements amounting to 220,000,000 euros, for an Air Traffic Services project, the new university campus and for the Electricity Authority (EAC).

    ''The agreements are a recognition that you are already part of the European family,'' EIB chairman Philippe Maystadt told a press conference, after he signed the agreements with Finance Minister Takis Klerides and the chairman of EAC George Georgiades.

    Council of Ministers informed about Commission report

    Nicosia, Oct 11 (CNA) - The Council of Ministers has decided to promote the speedy solution of all issues pending regarding the island's accession to the EU, before the Copenhagen European Council in December.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that to this end, Cyprus' Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou would be holding a series of meetings with the ministries involved to discuss each and every one of the pending issues, and President Glafcos Clerides would be presiding over meetings with local authorities and others.

    The cabinet held an extraordinary meeting today, during which it was informed by President Clerides and Vassiliou on the European Commission's progress report for Cyprus.

    Papapetrou pledged that with the ''correct policy and seriousness Cyprus can handle all obstacles, including reaction coming from the Turkish side''.

    ''We have proven that when we concentrate on our efforts and we are armed with the right policy, we can handle all these problems'', the Spokesman said.

    United Nations, Oct 11 (CNA) - The proposal by President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides for the demilitarisation of the island, was recalled by Cyprus' Representative at the UN General Assembly's First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, George Christofides.

    In his speech, Christofides asked the body to consider the President's proposal ''as a genuine offer for peace on the island and in the region at large''.

    Cyprus makes progress on women's issues, UN hears

    United Nations, Oct 11 (CNA) - The progress achieved in Cyprus on women's issues and the improvement of the position of women in society, was underlined by Cyprus' representative at the UN General Assembly's Third Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural issues, Penelope Erotocritou.

    Outlining the most recent steps taken by the government of Cyprus towards promoting the status of women, Erotocritou said Cyprus remains fully committed to fighting any kind of gender discrimination.
