    Overseas Greeks and Cypriots to denounce Turkish invasion

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Overseas Greeks and Cypriots in the United States will organise a series of events to demand the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Cyprus and the island's reunification, 28 years after the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus territory.

    The Cyprus Federation of America, the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), in cooperation with federations and community organisations, have announced that the events will be held from July 1 - 21.

    These include two gatherings in Astoria, a summer stage at New York Central Park by two Greek singers and memorial services for the victims of the coup d' etat of June 15, 1974, by the Greek Junta, and the victims of the Turkish invasion and occupation as well as for the first president of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios III.

    The services will be held at the Cathedral of Holy Trinity in Manhattan. Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, Archbishop Demetrios will officiate.

    Members of the diplomatic corps of Greece and Cyprus as well as congressmen and local politicians will be invited to attend.

    A Cyprus Federation of America press release reads that e-mail messages can be sent to US President George Bush to the address President@WhiteHouse.gov.

    Territory discussed at direct talks

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) - The territorial issue was at the epicentre of today's meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in the context of the fourth round of UN-led direct talks, aiming at a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem. The other three core issues addressed at the talks are governance, security and property.

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said that indications for the island's economy are satisfactory concerning this year and expressed the conviction that the policy followed by the government "in harmonious cooperation" with all productive classes of the country, will give a new impetus to the development of the economy within the framework of the European Union.

    In his address read out by Finance Minister Takis Klerides at the General Assembly of the Employers and Industrialists' Federation (OEV), held here today, President Clerides said the Cyprus economy is going through a crucial period marked mainly by the terrorist attacks against the US and the instability that followed the war in Afghanistan.

    Protaras, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Negotiators from six applicant countries, aspiring to join the European Union by 2004, appeared optimistic today that they will achieve their objective.

    Representatives from Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Cyprus, said after a two-day meeting here that they had a very useful and productive exchange of views and decided to meet again in early October in Budapest, before the European Commission issues its progress reports on each applicant country on the basis of which the EU Council will decide which to invite to join.

    US Ambassador designate calls for settlement by December

    Washington, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The US believes there is a real chance to reach a settlement in Cyprus before the European Union decides on enlargement in December, US Ambassador designate to Cyprus Michael Klosson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

    He also said Washington will continue to back UN efforts to find a solution and will press others to do the same. He reiterated that a solution must be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation that should address the legitimate concerns of both sides.
