    European Heritage Award goes to renovated building in divided capital

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- A 19th century building in Nicosia, renovated at the initiative of the Lyons Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Unprotected Child, has been awarded one of Europa Nostra's six Heritage Awards medals "for the exemplary and complex rehabilitation of an historic building complex achieved through the joint efforts of conservation professionals and the wider public."

    A special ceremony took place Wednesday at the building, situated in close proximity to the ceasefire line dividing the capital Nicosia, during which it was said that this year Europa Nostra received 103 nominations from 18 countries and awarded only six medals.

    Dutch minister backs EU enlargement, Cyprus peace talks

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- The Netherlands favour European Union enlargement, back an EU decision for Cyprus' accession prior to a political settlement and is pleased to see that peace talks are taking place to help reunify the island, Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Natural Environment and Fisheries Laurens Jan Brinkhorst has said.

    Cyprus to protest Turkish moves

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government will protest a "decision" by the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus to "extend" its so-called territorial waters from three to twelve miles, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced here today.

    The spokesman said the Greek Cypriot side will not be drawn into any moves which could facilitate the games the Turkish side is playing at a time when peace talks are underway to help find a negotiated settlement.

    Vasiliou: Possibility for EU enlargement delay very small

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus' chief negotiator with the European Union George Vasiliou said that the possibility for the EU enlargement to be delayed is very small and he stressed that in such a case, the delay will concern all candidate countries.

    In his remarks to the press after an hour-long meeting with Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, Belgian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister in charge of Agriculture, Vasiliou expressed the view that the EU will adhere to the enlargement time-table.

    Neyts said that according to EU commitments the negotiations for the entry of the candidate countries should start early 2003 and this will be confirmed at the European Council Summit end of this year.

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou dismissed in no uncertain terms harsh remarks by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who had said the spokesman was "ignorant and suffered from an inferiority complex."

    Papapetrou also said the European Union provided a clear-cut response to Denktash's claims that Cyprus does not belong to Europe.

    Nicosia-Moscow sign cooperation protocol

    Nicosia, May 30 (CNA) -- The mayors of Nicosia and Moscow signed here today a cooperation protocol to further develop friendly relations between the two capitals in various fields, including transport, town planning and the environment.

    Moscow mayor Yugy Loushkov said the protocol could help create the conditions to enhance ties between Nicosia and Moscow and could also contribute to the right atmosphere for closer relations between the two countries.
