    Cyprus protests arrival of Turkish research vessel

    United Nations, May 29 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has protested to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan the illegal arrival of the Turkish oceanographic research vessel "Piri Reis" at the ports of the Turkish-occupied towns of Kyrenia and Famagusta, declared closed to international navigation by the government of the Republic, after the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus continues to ascribe a great deal of importance to agriculture and although in percentage terms there has been a decline of the contribution of agriculture in recent years, in absolute terms there has been a remarkable growth, which has made it possible for the country to become self sufficient in a considerable number of agricultural products.

    This was said by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides addressing here today the opening ceremony of the 23rd FAO Regional Conference for Europe, attended by Agriculture Ministers and high-ranking officials from 43 European member countries of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

    Spokesman calls on Ankara to decide on its future course

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has called on Turkey to make up its mind on matters relating to its European aspirations and the Cyprus problem.

    "The Turkish government should, if not now, very soon, take its final decisions with regard to its future course. Will it continue to insist on maintaining its occupation of part of Cyprus, something that will halt its course to Europe, or will it decide to relinquish its policy on Cyprus and work to serve its own European prospects?," Papapetrou said today.

    Cypriot parties urge leaders to "work constructively" for settlement

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties have called on the leaders of the island's two communities, engaged in peace talks for the past five months, to "work constructively" for a just and lasting settlement.

    The call came in a joint communique, issued after a two-hour long meeting, which also announced that party representatives will meet again on 10 July at the Ledra Palace hotel, in the UN controlled buffer zone.

    Government welcomes remarks by EU senior official

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- The government has welcomed statements by a high-ranking European Union official that Cyprus will join the Union, if it concludes successfully its accession negotiations.

    "I would like to highlight two recent statements by High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana with regard to the Cyprus question, that assume particular significance because they follow, interpret and clarify fully previous remarks, for which Solana was criticized," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today in a written statement.

    Speaking in Copenhagen last week, Solana said the decision on how to handle Cyprus within the EU has already been taken.
