The delegation arrived in Israel early this morning but Israeli authorities had kept the deputies at the Tel Aviv airport denying their entry in Israel, and thus returned to Cyprus a few hours later. The delegation was made up of representatives from the main opposition party AKEL, the ruling Democratic Rally (DISI), the Democratic Party (DIKO), the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS), the United Democrats and the Environmentalists. Speaking to the journalists who were accompanying the delegation, the deputies expressed their indignation regarding the "insulting" and "inappropriate" attitude of the Israeli authorities and said they would ask for the immediate response to this attitude by the Cyprus government and the House of Representatives. In statements to journalists, who accompanied them to Israel, on their way back to Cyprus early this morning, the deputies said they arrived in Tel Aviv intending to visit Ramallah to meet with President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat and hand him over a resolution passed by the House expressing solidarity to the Palestinian people and demanding the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian territories. They said this was not made possible since they were denied entry by the Israeli authorities and treated "as if they were posing a threat against Israel's security". The deputies pointed out, however, "the fact they weren't able to meet with Arafat does not diminish the importance of their effort to do so." Speaking at a memorial service for the martyrs for Greco-Turkish friendship Costas Misiaoulis (Greek Cypriot) and Dervis Ali Kavazoglou (Turkish Cypriot), assassinated in 1965 by Turkish Cypriot terrorist organization TMT, Christofias said "we expect that a possible intervention by the UN" in the Cyprus issue, "will be based on the implementation of the relevant UN resolutions on Cyprus and the High Level Agreements calling for a bicommunal, bizonal federation."
