    United Nations, Apr 4 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan believes that it is still possible for the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to make substantive progress towards an agreement in June, if they set their mind to the task at hand.

    Yesterday at the UN seat, Annan's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto briefed the five permanent members of the Security Council and met with the British and US envoys on Cyprus, Lord David Hannay and Thomas Weston.

    United Nations, Apr 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host later this month the next meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which it is hoped will contribute in its own way to building the necessary bridges of understanding between the Palestinian and Israeli people. The meeting will take place between 16-18 April.

    Simitis sees Cyprus EU entry under Greek presidency

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis hopes that Cyprus' accession to the European Union will take place under the Greek EU presidency, in the first six months on next year.

    "This will be an important moment for Greece, a goal we have been working for very hard since 1994 and an important moment for the Union because other countries will also join the EU the same time as Cyprus," Simitis said yesterday in Athens after a cabinet meeting.

    Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Tasos Yiannitsis said the Greek EU presidency will be marked by the successful conclusion of the strategic objective, to see Cyprus join the Union.

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has called on the Turkish Cypriot leader to reconsider his backing for separate sovereignty in Cyprus, stressing that there can be only one sovereignty of the future state of Cyprus, which will emerge from peace negotiations, in accordance with UN resolutions and international law.

    Security Council urges Cyprus leaders to narrow differences

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis United Nations, Apr 4 (CNA) - The Security Council has urged the two leaders in Cyprus to "focus without delay on narrowing the differences between them on all issues that must be resolved as part of a comprehensive settlement" of the Cyprus problem, taking into "full consideration all relevant Council resolutions and treaties".

    In a statement after a Security Council meeting, during which the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto briefed the members on the outcome of the second round of talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Council President Sergey Lavrov said the members of the Council "called upon the parties to cooperate fully with the Secretary General and his Special Adviser and to look to them for assistance in order to move forward on the substance".
