    Greek fighters participate in military exercises in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Greek fighters were flying this morning over the government-controlled areas of the Cyprus Republic, participating in a joint military exercise between the Cyprus and Greek armed forces, code-named "Toxotis-Vergina", the island's Defence Ministry announced.

    The ministry said the exercise is taking place within the framework of the joint defence pact agreed by the governments of Greece and Cyprus in November 1993.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

    UN Cyprus envoy briefs Secretary General

    United Nations, Apr 3 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has briefed UN chief Kofi Annan on the results of the second round of the direct talks in Nicosia between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    This was the second meeting between Annan and de Soto in two days.

    Greek fighters participate in joint exercise

    Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Four pairs of F16 fighter jets of the Greek Air Force participated today in a joint two-day exercise, code-named "Toxotis-Vergina", which is part of the joint Greco-Cypriot defence pact, agreed on in November 1993.

    Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos said tomorrow a search and rescue exercise, code-named "Navagos", will take place during which National Guard units will cooperate with two Greek navy vessels.

    Government to increase price of oil

    Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government said it has to increase the price of oil and will start consultations with the parliamentary parties to this effect, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis said here today, after a cabinet meeting.

    He said due to the increase in the price of crude oil to around 27 dollars a barrel, it is necessary to increase the price of petrol and diesel in Cyprus by about four cents per litre.

    European Left condemns partitionist views on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- The Group of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL), which is meeting in Nicosia, has condemned the positions of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership for separate sovereignty in Cyprus, recognition of a separate state and a solution of the Cyprus problem based on confederation.

    In a resolution, adopted here today, the European Left said these positions are contrary to the basic principles of international law, the UN Charter, international conventions on human rights, European Union law and regulations and Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Apr 3 (CNA) -- Eurocypria Airlines, sister company of Cyprus Airways, is looking for a strategic ally in order to be able to maintain its competitiveness in charter flights, in view of the entry of Cyprus to the common European air space, Chairman of the Board of Management of Cyprus Airways Haris Loizides, has said.

    Speaking at a press conference yesterday Loizides said that as from the beginning of next year Eurocypria will renew its fleet of aircraft with four Boeing 737-800.

    United Nations, Apr 3 (CNA) - In view of tomorrow's briefing the UN Security Council will have on the course of talks to solve the Cyprus problem, envoys involved in the peace process are already in New York deliberating amongst themselves and with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston and British Special Representative Lord David Hannay met this afternoon with the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, who has already briefed the Russian President of the Security Council, Sergey Lavrov.
