    Richard Boucher: Peace talks for Cyprus are a positive sign

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) -- US State Department's spokesman Richard Boucher has described the UN-sponsored direct talks on Cyprus as a "positive sign" and noted that the US want to see these talks proceed according to the kind of urgency that the UN Security Council talked about last month.

    Cyprus journalists condemn press violation in occupied areas

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) today strongly denounced the continuing and expanding flagrant violation of press freedom in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

    As an example of such violations the UCJ mentions todays prevention of a ten-member delegation of the Association of Turkish Cypriot Journalists to cross into the government-controlled part of Cyprus to have talks with the UCJ on questions of mutual interest.

    President Clerides: No progress made so far for a solution

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here today that the necessary progress needed to pave the way for a solution to the Cyprus problem has not yet been achieved.

    Invited to comment on Turkey's FM Ismail Cem's statements that as regards Cyprus' accession all relevant factors should be taken into account and that responsibilities should be attributed to the Greek Cypriot side, the President said it is not Cem "who will decide where responsibility lies in case of deadlock in the Cyprus talks, but the UN Secretary General based on the reports he will receive and Europe based on the reports it will receive from the EU representatives in Cyprus."

    Cyprus Rally 2002 countdown has began

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Rally which is included in the FIA World Rally Championship for the third consecutive year, will take place under the springtime sun of Cyprus on April 18-21 in the southern coastal town of Limassol.

    The Cyprus Rally 2002 that celebrates this year its 30th anniversary has received a total of sixty-six entries, which is an average field for the 2002 FIA World Championship.

    De Soto said UN tries to assist both parties in Cyprus talks

    Athens, Mar 29 (CNA)--The UN special envoy for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto said here today that "the interests of Cypriots, G/C and T/C, are best served by the UN in the way they are doing, trying to assist the parties through the talks to achieve a comprehensive settlement."

    The UN envoy, who was speaking to the press after meeting the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, added that "these talks are being conducted at the invitation of the Secretary General and his mandate of good offices asks the parties to take full consideration of all the relevant UN resolutions and that is the framework in which the UN act. Essentially," he added, "this is a negotiation between Cypriots and the UN very much want to see that they will succeed."

    He said Greece, like Turkey has an important role to play for encouraging the success of these talks.
