    Nicosia, Dec 5 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached yesterday by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to get engaged in direct negotiations in mid-January 2002, at his invitation.

    "The Secretary General is very pleased at the agreement reached today by Mr Clerides and Mr Denktash for direct negotiations in mid January 2002, at his invitation," Annan's spokesman said Tuesday.

    Washington, Dec 5 (CNA) -- The United States have welcomed the agreement reached between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to get engaged to direct talks starting mid-January, in Cyprus, and commended both leaders for reaching this agreement, describing this development as "encouraging".

    Nicosia, Dec 5 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who is holding here today separate meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, said that no timetable has been set so far for the direct talks on Cyprus, to take place in mid-January under UN auspices, at UN premises, in Nicosia.

    Speaking to the press after meeting Clerides, de Soto said he was going to discuss this issue with Denktash during their meeting, scheduled to take place at 11.30 am in Turkish occupied Nicosia.

    Asked whether there will be serious negotiations this time, De Soto said "I think that both sides are committed to that."

    Tonight Clerides, Denktash and Soto will meet again over a dinner, Denktash is hosting in honour of de Soto, at his residence, in the occupied part of Nicosia.

    On Tuesday, de Soto, who leaves tomorrow, briefed foreign ambassadors here about the outcome of the Clerides-Denktash meeting.

    President Clerides and Denktash had their first face-to-face meeting in four years yesterday in Nicosia, after which de Soto, who attended the meeting, announced direct talks scheduled for mid-January in Cyprus, with no preconditions, all issues on the table, negotiations until a comprehensive settlement is achieved and no agreement until everything is agreed.
