    Cyprus talks resume January 2002

Nicosia, Dec 4 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus talks will resume in Nicosia in mid-January 2002, UN Special Advisor on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto announced here today, at the end of the meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

De Soto came out of the venue of the meeting, which lasted one hour and ten minutes and read out to 230 journalists a statement on the agreement between Clerides and Denktash.

He said they had agreed that the UN Secretary General, in the exercise of his mission of good offices on Cyprus, "would invite the two leaders to direct talks."

These talks, he said, would be held in Cyprus, starting mid-January 2002, on UN premises.

De Soto said the talks would be resumed under four principles: there will be no preconditions; all issues will be on the table; they will continue to negotiate in good faith until a comprehensive settlement is achieved; and nothing will be agreed until everything is agreed.
