[02] New National Numbering Plan operating in Cyprus1220:CYPPRESS:02New National Numbering Plan operating in Cyprus Nicosia, Dec 2 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus National Numbering Plan has changed and now 8-digit numbers apply for calls within Cyprus. Cyprus Telecommunications Authority said that the existing and new numbers will operate in parallel for a period of seven months from November 1, 2001 until June 1, 2002. As of June 1, 2002 all calls to the old numbers will be forwarded to recorded announcements for a period of six months. As concerns local calls the "2" digit and the area code will be incorporated into the existing number. The new numbers will be for Nicosia 22 instead of 02, for Famagusta 23 instead of 03, for Larnaca 24 instead of 04, for Limassol 25 instead of 05 and for Paphos 26 instead of 06. In mobile telephony and paging the "09" prefix will be replaced by the "99" digits. [03] Cyprus ratified international convention to combat financing of terrorism1340:CYPRESS:03Cyprus ratified international convention to combat financing of terrorism Nicosia, Dec 2 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sotos Zakheos handed Friday to the UN the instrument of ratification of the International Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism, signed by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides after its approval by the House plenary, last month. An official press release said Director of the UN General Secretariat Politha Kohona expressed UN Secretary General's satisfaction of the Convention's rapid ratification by the Cyprus Republic that shows Cyprus' contribution to the struggle against terrorism. Zakheos reiterated Cyprus' determination to contribute to this struggle, adding that the ratification proves that Cyprus is determined to fully apply the Convention's relevant provisions. He noted that last September's terrorist attacks against the US have strengthened international community's will to combat the phenomenon of terrorism that basically consists an attack against global values and principles.
