At the same time, he warned against highlighting these threats. "We should refrain from becoming a vehicle for such statements and thus serving the aims of the Turkish side, which wants to send the EU the message that Cyprus' accession should be blocked because of the political issue," he said before departing for an official visit to Moscow. The Cyprus Government takes all measures required to face the Turkish threats, he said, noting that the EU "listens to these threats which concern her" while Greece "listens and takes its measures." Cyprus' chief negotiator with the EU, former president George Vassiliou, commenting on statements by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit who criticized European officials for holding Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash responsible for the political problem in Cyprus, said that Ecevit's statements "show weakness." Vassiliou added that "someone who is self-confident and feels he is on the right track does not use such language in addressing the EU and its policies." Vassiliou departed today for Athens where he will have talks with Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister Anastasios Yiannitsis on issues relating to Cyprus' bid to join the EU. Vassiliou said that Cyprus, which has already closed 23 out of 29 chapters of EU legislation, is now ready to close one more, on home affairs and justice, and expressed the hope that by the end of the year taxation will also be closed. Vassiliou will fly from Athens to Brussels to attend the 14th meeting of the Intergovernmental Conference on Cyprus' accession.
