[01] US Ambassador: The US would support a Clerides-Dentkash meeting

Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- Washington is very focused and committed to try and get a just and durable solution to the Cyprus problem and considers that the road to that lies with the UN Secretary General's good offices mission, US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler said here today, adding that the US would support a meeting between President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, that would take place within the framework of UN Secretary General's good offices mission.

Invited to say how the US face Turkish Premier's threats for annexation of Turkish occupied Cyprus to mainland Turkey, Bandler said that the US did not think it was "particularly useful for any of the parties to react to possible future developments", adding that the US hope "that all parties would be very concentrated on the task to get a settlement", that would be "good for Cyprus, the grecoturkish developments, good for Greece and Turkey and the EU."

"We favour UN Secretary General's good offices mission and in that context if there is an agreement between the two gentlemen (President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash) to meet as part of the good offices mission we would support it," Bandler said after a meeting he had today with Social Democrats Movement leader Yiannakis Omirou. [02] Belgian Senators: Annexation would alienate Turkey from EU

Nicosia, Nov 16 -- Belgian Senators Philippe Monfils and Roelants Du Vivier, on a five-day visit to Cyprus, said here today that Cyprus will join the EU, irrelevantly of the settlement of its political problem and described Turkey's attitude and threats for annexation of the island's Turkish occupied areas to mainland Turkey as "unproductive" noting that annexation would alienate Turkey from its European orientation.

Speaking through an interpreter during a press conference the two Ķenators, who leave the island tomorrow, stressed that even if the Turkish side accepts now the resumption of talks on the Cyprus question, Cyprus accession to the EU will not be retarded nor will its harmonization process start from the beginning.

The two Belgian Senators are here at the request of Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michele, to draw up a report on the Cyprus question and Cyprus harmonisation progress by which as they said they will ask Belgium, which currently holds EU rotating Presidency, and the EU to contribute efforts for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.
