    [01] Famagusta Municipality - Protest

    Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- The mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, on the eastern coast of Cyprus, has protested strongly the illegal construction of two minarets in the town and has appealed to the UN and the European Union to act immediately and free Cyprus from the Turkish occupation troops and the illegal settlers that have flooded the northern occupied part of the Republic.

    "We appeal to you to take urgent and practical measures so that our land is freed of the Turkish troops and the illegal settlers," Mayor Andreas Pouyouros said in a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the Security Council and the EU. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [03] Cyprus - ELDR Congress - Resolution

    Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- The European Liberal Democratic Rally (ELDR) has approved a resolution on Cyprus calling for a lasting settlement of the Cyprus question "without further delay" and "in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, the decisions of the competent bodies of the EU and the acquis communautaire." It also calls for the intensive continuance of Cyprus' accession negotiations into the EU so that it becomes a full member of the Union in the next wave of enlargement.

    Speaking at a press conference held here today, General Secretary of Cyprus' United Democrats party Costas Themistocleous and deputy Androulla Vassiliou, who attended the ELDR's Congress on "The Future of Europe", that took place in Slovenia, September 26-28 said they briefed the delegates on Cyprus' effort to join the EU and to reach a settlement of the island's protracted political problem.     [04] AKEL General Secretary - Arrival

    Larnaca, Oct 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President and General Secretary of left- wing party AKEL Demetris Christofias said here today that British Minister for Europe Peter Hain has expressed Britain's most clear position on Cyprus' accession course into the European Union by saying that "Cyprus will accede in the European Union whether its political problem is solved or not."

    Speaking today on his arrival from Britain, where he attended a meeting on "Cyprus and the EU" held on the sidelines of a Labours' Conference, Christofias, commenting on recent statements made by Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit, who accused Cyprus of being "a centre of money laundering and anti- Turkish terrorism", also said that Turkey exercises state terrorism, through the illegal occupation of Cyprus.     [05] Cyprus - Minister of Justice - Measures - Terrorism

    Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Nicos Koshis said here today that during the last hours the names of four or five individuals were added on the Republic's stop list, after Cyprus' competent authorities received certain information on which he did not elaborate.

    Replying to journalists' questions, Koshis said Cyprus fully complies with the measures taken by the European Union countries to prevent terrorist acts, while invited to comment on foreign allegations implicating Cyprus in terrorism, the minister said "some individuals deliberately want to slander Cyprus", pointing out Cyprus fully cooperates with the EU and foreign intelligence services.     [06] Cyprus - Turkey - European Commission - Mid-term review

    Brussels, Oct 2 (CNA) -- Turkey has a valuable contribution to make with respect to the efforts of UN Secretary General to promote a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, European Commission said, in its mid-term review of the implementation of the enlargement strategy.

    In its information note to the European Council, the Commission noted that it "expects that Turkey will provide support for the current UN process in order to create the conditions for its successful conclusion" and reaffirmed that it "will work for a settlement of the Cyprus problem to be reached before Cyprus' accession to the EU, on the basis of the conclusions of the Helsinki European Council."     [07] Foreign Minister - US government - Terrorism

    Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- The US government has assured Cyprus that it is far from being included in the State Department's political list of countries harbouring terrorism, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, adding that a "technical list" issued by the American Civil Aviation named countries, including Cyprus, which are valnurable to terrorists' infiltration.

    Speaking to the press, Kasoulides said that the Cyprus government has protested Cyprus' inclusion in this "technical list" and that the possibility of excluding Cyprus from the list was "under investigation." CNA/AAR/RM/MK/2001
