London, Oct 2 (CNA) -- The absence of a political settlement in Cyprus
cannot delay or block Cyprus' entry into the EU, British Minister for
Europe Peter Hain has said.
In his remarks at a different meeting in Brighton, EU Commissioner for
enlargement Gunter Verheugen reiterated the EU Helsinki conclusions that a
settlement would facilitate accession but it is not a precondition.

[02] Population Census
Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- The Cypriot authorities embarked today on a two-
month population census, at an estimated cost of 1,4 million Cyprus pounds,
whose initial overall results are expected in early December.
This is the sixth time the authorities of the Cyprus Republic are carrying
out a population census of the Cypriot citizens and the 13th census all
those who normally reside on the island since 1881.
