CNA MM/GP/20011420:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus talks - Resumption - 12 SeptemberNicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) -- Peace talks on Cyprus, under UN auspices, are to resume in New York on September 12, the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto announced here today, at the conclusion of his eight-day visit to the island.Speaking at a press conference, he told a packed room at the Ledra Palace hotel, in the UN buffer zone, that on behalf of the Secretary-General, he had conveyed to "HE Mr Glafkos Clerides, the Greek Cypriot leader and HE Mr Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader, an invitation to resume the search for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, under the Secretary-General's auspices." Mr de Soto said it was the hope of the UN that "a new and re-invigorated phase of the Secretary-General/s good offices will begin with separate meetings of the Secretary-General with the two leaders on 12 September 2001, in New York." He noted that no date had been foreseen for adjournment of the talks "that we hope will begin" on 12 September. "What we hope is that in the days following the meeting with the Secretary- General, the two leaders would hold separate working meetings with me, as they have done in the past, on the substantive issues that must be addresssed as part of a comprehensive settlement." The Peruvian diplomat said the Secretary-General was "widely supported" in his hope to see "an intense period of work in the time ahead as part of a continuous process." The Secretary-General, he added, "very much wants" to be in a position to report progress on the issues of substance before the end of this year. "This is without prejudice to the guiding principle that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed," he concluded his opening statement. UN-led proximity talks were interrupted last year when Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, backed by Ankara, withdrew from the peace process, demanding recognition of his self-styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus.
