[02] House President - Cyprus problem
Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias has
called on mediators in the Cyprus question to prevent the possibility of
Cyprus facing blackmailing dilemmas, in view of its accession to the
European Union.
Speaking during a gathering commemorating the fall to the advancing Turkish
troops, that invaded the island in 1974, of the village Aheritou, at the
eastern part of the island, Christofias also said that UN-led talks on the
Cyprus problem should be conducted on the basis of relevant UN resolutions
and High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979 providing for a bizonal,
bicommunal federation, because otherwise they would not be substantive and
they would bear no fruit.

[03] Cyprus - Tax reform - Conference
Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Finance Minister Takis Klerides has said
that the reforms to be made on Cyprus tax system will provide for the
increase of taxes for the off shore companies, the reduction of taxes for
Cypriot companies and mainly for the reduction of taxes for the persons of
lower income means.
Speaking to the press at the conclusion of a two-day conference held
yesterday and the day before in Nicosia "for the consideration of tax
aspects of Cyprus as an International Business Centre joining the EU and
efforts to eliminate harmful taxation", Klerides also expressed optimism
that a substantive tax reform would be reached and solutions would be found
on the issue of the off shore companies taxation.
