[01] Cyprus Parliament - British Bases - Resolution

Nicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives has called on Britain to suspend construction of a huge telecommunications antenna at its military base at Akrotiri, on the southern coast of this east Mediterranean strategic island, because of its effect on the environment and the health of the Greek Cypriot people living in the area.

In a unanimous resolution the 56-seat parliament said construction work must not proceed without the consent of the Cyprus Republic and urged the House of Commons to act in this direction.

    [03] Cyprus - Egyptian publishers

Nicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- Hundreds of Egyptian publications have received a two- month reprieve from Cypriot authorities to comply with a law to print in Cyprus or lose their license here, a Press and Information Office (PIO) senior officer told CNA.

Eleonora Gavriilidou, in charge of local press and public relations at PIO, confirmed that some 1,000 owners (mostly Egyptians) of such publications violate the local legislation based on which licenses had been issued.

[04] President Clerides - SBA Administrator

Nicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- Administrator of the British Bases to Cyprus (SBA), Air Vice Marshall Bill Rimmer, said here today the building of a big low band telecommunications antenna at Akrotiri, one of the two military bases Britain has retained on the island since Cyprus became an independent nation in 1960, "is important to us and we could maintain our intend to construct the antenna over the next three years."

Speaking after a meeting he had here today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Rimmer said he thanked Clerides for the "coherence, thoughtfulness and support" shown during the demonstrations and riots that took place earlier this month in the Akrotiri area when hundreds of Greek Cypriots protesting against plans to erect the antenna clashed with British Bases police.

[05] Cyprus - House of Commons - Motion

Nicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- Members of the House of Commons have expressed their commitment to the efforts made for the return of the occupied town of Famagusta to its people, according to a motion that was submitted by British labour MP Tom Cox to the House of Commons.

The motion, backed by other 15 MPs, states that the House of Commons "remembers with deep sorrow that another year has passed since the Turkish military invasion of the Republic of Cyprus in 1974, and that the beautiful and historic town of Famagusta remains a deserted town in the now occupied area of northern Cyprus and is inaccessible to its former citizens".
