[01] UN Security Council - Cyprus issue - Meeting
Nicosia, Jun 12 (CNA) - The UN Security Council has reiterated its full
support to efforts by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to achieve a
comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, divided since Turkish troops invaded
and occupied 37 percent of its territory in 1974, it urged the parties
involved to engage in the peace process and reaffirmed UN resolutions for a
settlement.
In a statement to the press after a meeting in New York yesterday, this
month's Council President, Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh, said
the members "welcomed and supported" Annan's intention to continue with the
process of proximity talks he had initiated in November 1999, aimed at
preparing the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive
settlement, as was announced at the time.

Cyprus - European Union - Ministerial conference
Brussels, Jun 12 (CNA) - The seventh conference between the European Union
and Cyprus, at a ministerial level, was held in Luxembourg today, during
which the Republic closed the chapter on the Free Movement of People
without a provision for a transitional period after accession.
Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides represented Cyprus at the conference,
at which the Swedish rotating presidency congratulated the Republic for the
progress it achieved so far in adopting the aquis communautaire (EU laws
and regulations).
