    [04] Spokesman - Cyprus - Turkey - EU

Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that Rapporteur of Turkey in the European Parliament, Alain Lamassoure's statement that the Cyprus problem should be resolved by the end of next year, does not revoke the Helsinki conclusions.

Invited to comment on the statement made by Lamassoure yesterday in Ankara that a failure to resolve the division of Cyprus, a frontrunner for EU membership by the end of next year will pose serious problems, Papapetrou said that such statements send out the message "to all sides not to consider adopting such policies that would hinder the settlement of the Cyprus problem."

Deputy and President of the Struggling Democratic Movement (ADIK) Dinos Michaelides said his party would only back a candidate from the centre of socialdemocratic parties and that the new House President could lean on ADIK's cooperation.

Deputy of the Environmentalist Movement George Perdikis called on the parliamentary parties to cooperate with the new House President noting however that his party abstained from voting since they decline to get involved in a possible give and take situation.
