[01] President Clerides - New French Ambassador

Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- The search for a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus problem remains the first priority of the Cyprus government, in the attainment of which the prospect of accession into the European Union constitutes a vital contributing factor, President Glafcos Clerides said yesterday while receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of France to Cyprus Jacques Depaigne.

Presenting his credentials Depaigne said France unreservedly supports the UN-led proximity talks aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus question and that his country "deems regrettable the interruption of the talks hoping that this state of affairs is not definitive and wishing for their speedy resumption". [02] Socialist leader - Letter - Judgment of ECHR

Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- Cypriot socialist leader Vassos Lyssarides has urged leaders of the member-parties of the European Socialist Party to make clear to Turkey that all states, especially those aspiring to EU membership, "should conform to the judgements of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)."

Lyssarides, President of the Social Democrats Movement, sent a letter to European socialist leaders concerning a recent decision of the ECHR, which found Turkey guilty of mass violations of human rights in Cyprus, as a result of its 1974 invasion and the occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory since then.

    [03] Interior Minister - Elections

Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- First results in the 27 May parliamentary elections are expected to be announced early on Monday monring (28 May) but the final outcome of this much-contested election campaign is expected at either around noon or later in the afternoon of the same day, Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou has said.

"Some 10,000 public servants will work for the elections, that will cost around two million pounds (about four m. US dollars)," he said, adding that 1250 polling stations will operate on Sunday, 27 May, for the 467.182 registered voters called to elect 56 deputies and two representatives for each of the two religious groups (Maronites and Armenians).
