by Maria Koniotou Athens, May 4 (CNA) - Reductions in Greece's arms acquisition programmes would not affect in any way planning or strategies relating to a joint defence pact between Greece and Cyprus, Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos said here today.

[07] President Clerides - Return from Athens - Statement

Larnaca, May 4 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides returned this evening from Athens "fully satisfied" with his talks in the Greek capital, noting that no decisions were taken but many issues were raised and discussed concerning possible eventualities with respect to the island's accession course to the European Union and efforts to settle the Cyprus question.

Speaking on arrival from Greece, the President predicted that as Cyprus gets closer to EU membership, Turkey is likely to request postponement of the Republic's accession course and express readiness for real negotiation, adding that he did not think the Turkish side would change its tune as far as the resumption of the UN-led peace talks are concerned at this stage.
