[03] UN top Cyprus envoy - EU Commissioner
Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) -- The need for the solution of the Cyprus question,
that would emerge from UN peace talks, to be in line with European Union
legislation was the focus of a meeting earlier this week between UN
Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and EU
Commissioner for enlargement Gunter Verheugen.
De Soto and Verheugen's spokesman Jean Christophe Filori have told CNA that
the meeting is part of regular consulations between the UN and the EU to
exchange views and compare notes with a view to help the two processes
(peace talks and accession) to move in the same direction without any
overlapping.

Brussels, Mar 29 (CNA) - The Cyprus Republic today provisionally closed one
of the most difficult chapters in the accession talks with the European
Union, the chapter on the movement of capital, during the 11th Meeting of
the Inter- Governmental Conference at deputy level, held in Brussels, where

Cyprus has now completed 18 out of 29 chapters that are to be examined,

[06] Cyprus - European People's Party - ED Group - Session
Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) – Cyprus' European Union accession course that got
underway in 1998 and efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem are
the main issues discussed at the two-day session of the European People's
Party - European Democrats (EPP-ED) Group Bureau, which got underway here
today.
Speaking at the opening, EPP-ED Chairman Hans-Gert Pottering expressed
solidarity with efforts for an early settlement on the island and the
Republic's accession to the EU, recalling the party's support to the
Helsinki summit decisions providing that a solution in Cyprus is not a
precondition for accession.
