Markides said the Governor of the Central Bank of Yugoslavia Mladjan Dinkic gave him at their meeting Wednesday a list of names of companies which Belgrade considers dubious but offered no information as to why the Yugoslav authorities regard these companies with suspicion. "We have told them that as things stand, there is nothing we can do unless they explain to us objectively why these companies are suspect and they said they would gather the information and send them to us by the end of next week," Markides said. He said Cyprus has an obligation to help Yugoslavia fully to establish whether funds belonging to the state have been usurped provided that formal requests to that effect are received via official channels. Markides explained that the 1986 agreement defines the appropriate procedure to be followed in this line of work and stressed that Cyprus has responded fully to requests from the International Tribunal in the Hague as a member state of the UN. The Attorney General said the Yugoslav authorities are interested in the period 1989 to 1994 and said Cyprus will act on the basis of the bilateral agreement of 1986.
