[02] US State Department report - Cyprus

Washington, Feb 27 (CNA) -- A US State Department report on human rights in Cyprus for the year 2000 refers to restrictions on freedom of movement in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus and says the treatment of Greek Cypriots and Maronites living in the occupied areas does not meet the terms of a 1975 agreement to respect the human rights of these people.

The report notes that the government of the Republic of Cyprus generally respected human rights and refers to a Turkish Cypriot administration in the northern part of the island, noting that it is not recognised by either the US or any other country except Turkey.

Brussels, Feb 27 (CNA) -- The Cyprus question and the country's accession course for European Union membership formed part of discussions US Secretary of State Colin Powell had here today with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou.

The two ministers exchanged views on ways the peace process towards a Cyprus solution can move forward and Papandreou, replying to questions after the meeting, said Powell did not mention anything about a US initiative on this.
