[01] Cyprus - Protest - Turkish prisons - Greek Cypriot
Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) - Left-wing AKEL political party today staged a
demonstration against clashes in Turkish prisons, during raids across the
country to end a hunger strike by over 1.000 mostly leftist inmates
yesterday, and to protest against the illegal "detention" of Greek Cypriot
Panicos Tziakourmas in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.
AKEL started its march along Nicosia main arteries at noon, stating that it
deplores "the barbarity with which Turkey's security forces attacked the
political prisoners on hunger strike in Turkish prisons", stressing that
"the attack, which resulted in the death of many of the protesters,
indicates the antidemocratic and oppressive nature of the Turkish regime".
