    [03] President Clerides - New Luxembourg ambassador

    Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA) -- Luxembourg's new ambassador to Cyprus Fernand Kartheiser today expressed "strong support" to the UN-led proximity talks for a settlement on the island and said "it is indeed high time for everybody to realize that this issue must be resolved very soon and in full accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions and the conclusions of the Helsinki European Council."

    Presenting his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides today, Kartheiser also referred to Cyprus' European Union accession talks, initiated after the Luxembourg European Council held in 1997, noting that they have made "very good progress and Cyprus feels rightly proud for having succeeded so quickly and efficiently in closing already an impressive number of Chapters."

    [04] President Clerides - New Canadian High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA)-- Canada continues to be ready to cooperate with others to promote and support a setllement to the Cyprus question, the country's new High Commissioner to the Republic Franco Pillarella said today.

    Presenting his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides, Pillarella said that "Canada wishes to see a mutually acceptable permanent settlement negotiated by the two Cypriot communities" adding that his country "strongly supports" the UN Secretary-General's efforts to achieve a desired solution to the Cyprus issue.     [05] President Clerides - New Malaysian High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA) -- Malaysia hopes for an early peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem and supports the UN-led negotiations the country's new High Commissioner to Cyprus Shamsudin bin Abdullah said today, presenting his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides.

    Referring to relations between Cyprus and Malaysia, Abdullah said that "for the past several years, we have witnessed a steady increase of cooperation, both at the bilateral as well as at the multilateral levels" adding that "there exists potential for the expansion of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between our two countries".     [06] Government - Turkey - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA) -- Turkey was given a clear message regarding the Cyprus question and its European Union accession course from the European Council held in Nice earlier this week and yesterday's UN Security Council meeting, Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told his daily briefing today.

    Papapetrou also said statements made by the American Permanent Representative to the UN Richard Holbrooke, who was personally involved in the Cyprus peace effort, on the Turkish side's stance towards the UN-led proximity talks could also be viewed in this framework.

    [07] Cyprus - Illegal immigrants - Deportation - Lebanon

    Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA) -- The Cypriot authorities have sent back to Lebanon 47 illegal immigrants who came to the island recently.

    According to a Police press release the 47 illegal immigrants were transferred yesterday to Lebanon on a private ship and measures are being taken to prevent other illegal immigrants from coming here, including the patrolling of the coast both by sea and air. CNA/RM/MA/2000
