    [01] Cyprus - Military forces - Research - Conclusions

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) - Research carried out by the Cyprus Centre for Strategic Studies for 200-2001 concludes that the Turkish occupation forces are far stronger militarily than the armed forces of the Republic of Cyprus and that especially with regard to aeronautical forces, Turkey's might is in stark contrast to National Guard capabilities.

The study notes that Turkey's proximity to Cyprus, as opposed to Greece's distance, is another factor, which gives Turkey an advantage.

    [02] European Commission - Cyprus - Report

Brussels, Nov 29 (CNA) - The European Commission today published a report, which includes a chapter on Cyprus, foreseeing reduced growth rhythms and some fiscal consolidation for the year 2001 and noting that more needs to be done to achieve the government's medium term deficit objective.

In its report, the Commission notes the crisis in the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) and points out that the government will be under political pressure next year, in the run-up to spring's parliamentary elections. CNA/мл/RG/лл/2000

    [03] Commerce Minister - High-tech seminar

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) - Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, said today that Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU), apart from its paramount political significance, will have widespread economic and social ramifications, adding that the government is currently in the middle of a complete overhaul of legislation and institutional structures, in the context of harmonisation with the respective legislation and institutions of the EU.

Addressing the high-tech seminar organised by the Commerce Ministry, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Nicosia and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rolandis said "Cyprus has a record of a successful economic performance, reflected in rapid growth, full employment conditions and external and internal stability, almost throughout the post-Independence period".

    [05] Spokesman - UN Secretary-General - Statement

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) - The government has welcomed as "positive" remarks by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that the Turkish Cypriot leader should not carry out his threat not to participate in the next round of UN-led proximity talks, due to resume in late January in Geneva.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today the Greek Cypriot side considers that current discussions do not necessarily prejudge the outcome of the negotiations, noting that there are elements that he would like to see changed.

[06] Foreign Minister - Cyprus problem

Larnaca, Nov 29 (CNA) - Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, said today that the government had all the good will to attend the next round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, as long as the UN Secretary- General's report on Cyprus and the Security Council's resolution on the renewal of the UN peacekeeping force's (UNFICYP) mandate were positive.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, on his return from a trip abroad where he discussed the Cyprus problem in all his meetings, Kasoulides said the Republic's diplomatic services were working diligently and had already acted to prevent any negative references in the UN chief's report and the UNFICYP resolution.
