    [03] EU - Candidate countries - Joint statement

    Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- Accession to the European Union is not an end in itself, but requires correct enlargement to help create a powerful and effective Union, Foreign Ministers of six candidate countries said yesterday in a joint statement, issued at the end of their third meeting held in Budapest.

    Cyprus was represented by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and his counterparts from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia also attended the meeting. (ÊÕÐÅ/ÑÌ/MM)

    [04] Foreign Minister of Sweden - Cyprus - Visit

    Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Anna Lindh arrives tonight in Cyprus for a one day visit.

    Tomorrow, Lindh will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and later on she will hold talks with her Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides. CNA/RM/MM/2000

    [05] Spokesman - Turkey - Violations

    Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has called on Turkey to be in line with international law and the acquis communautaire to help itself get out of the current deadlock it is facing.

    Invited to comment on recent threats by Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit that Cyprus will turn into a Kossovo if the island is not divided into two separate states, Papapetrou said that "Turkish diplomacy and Turkish policy are in a difficult situation" and should tackle the actual problems they are facing instead of using threats.     [06] Cyprus - EU - Accession negotiations

    Brussels, Nov, 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus today completed accession negotiations on the chapter concerning free movement of goods.

    Cyprus has closed 17 of a total of 29 chapters and continues to be ahead of other candidate countries in the harmonization effort with the aquis communautaire. CNA/NM/RM/MM/2000

    [07] Cyprus government - EP - Turkey

    Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- The government has welcomed as very positive yesterday's European Parliament (EP) resolution urging Turkey to withdraw its occupation troops from Cyprus and adopt a constructive and positive stance on the island's political problem.

    The resolution, approved yesterday by the plenary session of the EP, was attached to the report by MEP Philippe Morillon on the progress Turkey has made towards its accession to the European Union (EU).

    [08] President Clerides - Cyprus problem - Turkey

    Nicosia, Nov 16 (CNA) -- President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides today said the Cyprus people should not be concerned about recent threats from Turkey that the island could turn into another "Bosnia" or "Kosovo".

    He was speaking to the press after a meeting with high ranking clerics from the region who are in Cyprus for the Major Synod aiming at solving the problems facing the Church of Cyprus.
