[01] Germany - Cyprus peace effort

By Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 10 (CNA) -- Germany has described the current round of UN-led proximity talks as "an important step" in the peace process and expressed satisfaction with President Glafcos Clerides' engagement in them, noting that the UN observations given to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties are "an excellent basis for further discussion" with a view to reach a comprehensive settlement.

German envoy to the talks and the country's Ambassador in Nicosia Peter Wittig has also said Germany wants to see a united Cyprus join the European Union soon but pointed out that if no settlement is reached, accession remains a very strong option but not a guarantee.
