    [01] National Guard - Military exercise - Defence Minister

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - The annual military exercise of the National Guard, "Nikiforos 2000", began today with the signing up of reserves.

    Defence Minister, Socratis Hasikos, expressed satisfaction over the number of reserves who showed up for the manoeuvres, noting that measures have been taken so that less reserves seek exemption from military exercises for professional reasons. CNA/NMA/RG/MM/2000

    [02] Spokesman - UN envoy - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, announced today that President Glafcos Clerides would be having a working breakfast with the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, on October 23 and again on October 27.

    Papapetrou also said that the National Council, top advisory body to the President comprising parliamentary parties, would convene soon, regardless of the President's meetings with de Soto, who arrives Sunday for a six-day visit. CNA/MA/RG/MM/2000

    [03] Cyprus government - Milosevic - Bank account

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - The Cyprus government today made clear that it has not located any bank account on the island of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic or members of his family, noting that relevant press reports in foreign media did not reflect reality.

    Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, today reminded that the government had in the past urged anyone in possession of relevant concrete facts to submit them for investigation, adding that no one had come forward. CNA/MA/RG/MM/2000

    [05] Senior Russian official - Cyprus

    Moscow, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Russia's former Ambassador to Cyprus Georgi Muradov has expressed concern over the lack of progress in the Cyprus peace process and moves from certain circles to find a settlement out of the context of UN resolutions.

    Muradov, who holds the post of the Director of the International Relations Department of the government of Moscow, told CNA here today that the Cyprus problem has become a "test case" for the international community.

    [06] New Ambassador of Argentina - Credentials

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - The new Ambassador of Argentina to Cyprus, Gregorio Jorge Dupont, today presented his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides, stressing that his government "reiterates once more its solemn support to the ongoing UN-led proximity talks, in the hope that the people of Cyprus will promptly achieve a just peace in a united Cyprus".

    He added that the friendship between the two countries "is demonstrated and enhanced by the deployment of the Argentine contingent within the UN Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which contributes to preserving the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus". CNA/RG/MM/2000

    [07] EU official - Cyprus - Press conference

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Director General of the European Union (EU) General Directorate for Enlargement Issues, Eneko Landaburu, said today that the EU was greatly interested in proximity talks to solve the Cyprus problem and that it was for this reason that European Commissioner on Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, would be in Geneva next month for the fifth round of talks.

    Landaburu noted, however, that it was not up to the EU at this point to determine its position regarding the acquis communautaire if a settlement of the Cyprus problem was achieved. CNA/GG/RG/ΜΜ/2000

    [08] UN envoy for Cyprus - Visit

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - The UN's top official dealing with the Cyprus peace effort, Alvaro de Soto, arrives here Sunday with a view to have "interim discussions" with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides, before he embarks on another round of proximity talks with them in early November.

    "It would be very useful for him to have talks on the island ahead of the Geneva meetings", a UN official has said.

    [09] Cyprus women - New York - World March Against Poverty

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Seventy women from Cyprus, representing 24 women's organisations and trade unions, arrived in New York yesterday to participate in today's World March of Women 2000 Against Poverty and Violence, to take place outside the UN headquarters.

    Speaking at a press conference, the women said that by participating in the World March, they wish to express their solidarity with all women living under conditions of violence, racism, nationalism, and violation of human rights. CNA/RG/??/2000

    [10] Health Minister - WHO meeting

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Health Minister, Frixos Savvides, said today that "accidents and injuries represent one of the most serious public health problems, in most countries of the world, developed and developing, contributing to high levels of morbidity and mortality.

    Addressing the World Health Organisation Intercountry Meeting on the Community Safety Promotion Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Savvides notes that "the Cyprus government shares international concern about safety promotion programmes and awaits with anticipation recommendations and guidelines that will emanate from this meeting, in order to help in the formulation of future policies".     [11] German and Norwegian State Ministers - Visit

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Developments in the Cyprus peace effort, the Republic's European Union accession course and the role Germany can play with regard to both issues will be the focus of discussions German State Minister for Foreign Affairs Christoph Zoepel will have here later this week.

    His Norwegian counterpart Johansen, who arrives here Thursday, will also have talks with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, which will focus on bilateral issues. During his brief visit, Johansen will be briefed on efforts to settle the Cyprus issue and review bilateral relations. CNA/MM/RG/2000

    Moscow, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Nicosia and Moscow have agreed to establish relations in various fields, exchanging experiences and knowhow as well as visits of officials and experts.

    [13] Interparliamentary Union - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) - Ruling right-wing Democratic Rally President, Nicos Anastasiades, said today that the sooner Ankara realises that the so-called "realities" of the Turkish occupation of the northern third of Cyprus cannot be part of a solution to the Cyprus problem, the sooner a just and viable settlement will be achieved.

    Addressing the plenary session of the 104th Interparliamentary Union, taking place in Jakarta, Anastasiades described the situation in Cyprus as unacceptable, as for the past 26 years it is in violation of the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions, as well as the principles of international law.
