    [02] Interior Minister - Illegal immigrants - Captain - Court

    Paphos, Sep 29 (CNA) - The Paphos District Court today renewed for a further eight days the remand order against the captain of the boat which sank off the coast of Paphos on September 13, with 275 illegal immigrants aboard.

    Twenty-eight-year-old Ibrahim Mohammad Farrah from Turkey gave statements to the Police, shedding more light on a gang in Lebanon, organising the transportation of illegal immigrants to various countries, including Cyprus. CNA/SS/CS/RG/GP/2000

    [03] Democratic Party - Candidacies

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- Lawyer and MP Tassos Papadopoulos will be the new president of centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) as no other party member is contesting the position in the conference to be held October 7 and 8, in Nicosia, it was announced here today, after the candidacies for the DIKO leadership were submitted.

    In a brief statement to the press after the announcement, Papadopoulos said the party conference and new leadership will "open up a new period and a new stage in our activities", adding "we will build on the principles and political positions we have today."

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- President of the Social Democrats Movement Vassos Lyssarides leaves Sunday for Strasburg, where he will address on Monday a session of the European Parliamnet Socialist Group.

    Meanwhile it was announced, that the Presidency of the European Socialist Party has decided to send a delegation to Cyprus on November 20 in order to prepare a report on the political situation here, the continuing occupation by Turkey of the Republic's northern third and to evaluate Cyprus' European course.     Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA)-- A two-day seminar opened here today on the subject "European integration and constitutional law", organised by the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission of the Council of Europe) and Cyprus Legal Service.

    The seminar takes place within the framework of the Joint Programme between the European Commission and the Venice Commission for strengthening democracy and constitutional development in central and eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

    [07] President Clerides - Maritime tragedy - Condolences

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides expressed his deep condolences to his Greek counterpart Constantinos Stefanopoulos and Prime Minister Costas Simitis for the maritime disaster near the island of Paros, which cost the life of over 70 people.

    In telegrammes to Stefanopoulos and Simitis, President Clerides notes that "it is with great sorrow we have been informed of the maritime tragedy that struck Greece with the sinking of the 'Express Samina' ferry". CNA/RM/RG/2000

    [08] President Clerides - Chinese Ambassador - Credentials

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - The Cyprus government "cannot and will not accept the Turkish demands and proposals for confederation" in Cyprus, as they are contrary to the relevant UN resolutions and high level agreements of 1977 and 1979 and would lead to the perpetuation of the status quo, President Clerides said today receiving the credentials of the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Cyprus, Song Aiguo.

    Presenting his credentials to President Clerides, Aiguo said his country supports "the good offices of the UN Secretary-General" and expressed hope that "the two ethnic groups of Cyprus can resolve the question of Cyprus in a fair and reasonable manner through negotiations on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions at an early date".     Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today referred to the invaluable help Greece is offering to Cyprus' diplomatic struggle for a solution to the Cyprus question.

    Receiving the credentials of Greece's new Ambassador to Cyprus, Christos Panagopoulos, President Clerides said that "with the close cooperation and valuable assistance of the Greek government, we will successfully deal with any problems and fulfil our goals to the benefit of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, despite the so far negative and intransigent stance of the Turkish side".     [10] Declaration - Famagusta - CoE

    Strasbourg, Sep 29 (CNA) - A written declaration on "Rebuilding Famagusta" was presented during today's opening of the Parliamentary Session of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, prepared by British MPs and members of the British delegation to the Council of Europe (CoE), Thomas Cox and Edward O'Hara.

    The declaration, signed by 22 members of the Parliamentary Session, calls for the speeding up of the process of finding a solution to the Cyprus question and the return of all the residents of Famagusta to the town, "which has lain empty and unapproachable for 26 years", since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.     [11] House President - Death of former PM of Canada

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, has expressed his deep sorrow for the death of former Prime Minister of Canada Pierre Elliott Trudeau, whom he described as "a politician with many qualities" led by faith and ideals which he served as Premier and as one of the most distinguished political personalities on the international scene.

    In a statement on the death of Trudeau, Kyprianou pointed out that the Canadian politician contributed greatly to his country, gave new visions and goals, adding that he fought for the establishment of principles and values and for the functioning of international cooperation on a proper basis.
