    [03] Government Spokesman - Turkish Cypriot poll - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) - The Cyprus government today said it was significant that a large percentage of Turkish Cypriots are in favour of a federal solution in Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the island.

    Commenting on a poll carried out by a Turkish Cypriot newspaper, Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said it indicated that there is a political base to seek a compromise between the two sides. CNA/MM/RG/MA/2000

    [04] Cyprus Rally 2000 - Special stages

    by Riana Magidou Limassol, Sep 8 (CNA) - Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Luis Moya continue to head the Cyprus Rally in their Ford pulling fast times to increase their lead on this 10th round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

    Speaking earlier today, Sainz said special stage 5 was "incredibly hard" and "physically demanding". He also noted that temperatures inside their car were extremely high.

    [05] Cyprus and Athens Stock Exchanges - Cooperation

    Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) - The Stock Exchanges of Cyprus (CSE) and Athens (ASE) are promoting a joint stock exchange pact, to further develop their cooperation.

    President of ASE and the Athens Derivative Market, Panayiotis Alexakis, who is heading a delegation visiting Cyprus, told a press conference today that cooperation was important, in order to maintain "the liquidity in the stock exchanges to the benefit of their viable operation and the national economies".     [06] Government Spokesman - Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) - Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said today that the government looks forward to the materialisation of assurances it has received that a substantive dialogue would be held on the Cyprus problem, stressing that if the Turkish side obstructs substantive negotiations, then it would have to take the consequences from the European Union and others.

    Papapetrou also said that the government would welcome any move on behalf of the United Nations to submit a document during the forthcoming talks, as long as it is within the defined framework in which they are moving and conducting the talks. CNA/MM/RG/MA/2000

    [07] SPORTS: Anorthosis - Turkish denial

    Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) -- Turkey's Foreign Ministry did not allow a Turkish women's handball team to play against a Cypriot team, within the framework of the European Women's Handball Cup.

    As a result, the women's handball team of Anorthosis Famagusta, Cyprus, qualified for the second round of the European Cup.

    [08] British envoy - Cyprus talks

    London, Sep 8 (CNA) - Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, said today that his country agrees with the UN Secretary- General's appeal for substantial negotiatons during the fourth round of Cyprus peace talks and warned that Kofi Annan may later on set a deadline for the talks.

    Speaking at a press conference in London, only a few days before the talks begin in New York, Sir David said it would be a mistake to overestimate or underestimate what has been achieved so far, noting that there was a change of gear in the third round of talks and there should be another change of gear during the fourth round.     [09] Cyprus Rally - First leg

    Limassol, Sep 8 (CNA) - Leading a spectacular race from the beginning of today's first leg of the Cyprus Rally 2000, Ford's Spanish driver Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Luis Moya finished their race 1 minute 20,2 seconds ahead of the second car, Francois Delecour in a Peugeot, followed by Richard Burns in a Subaru Impreza and Colin McRae in a Ford.

    Sainz lead from the beginning of the first leg of the Rally, comprising nine special stages on gravel, that places high pressure on the drivers and their cars.

    [10] President Clerides - Greek Prime Minister

    by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 8 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis discussed here today the present phase of the Cyprus problem and the proximity talks, scheduled to resume for a fourth round on September 12, while Premier Simitis also briefed the President on his meeting with US President Bill Clinton.

    Speaking to the press after their hour-long meeting, both President Clerides and Simitis stressed there was complete agreement in their views, but pointed out that certain issues discussed could not be revealed because of the news blackout the UN have requested on matters concerning the proximity talks.
