    [01] President Clerides - Russian President

    by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 7 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has described a meeting here between President Glafcos Clerides and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as useful and very interesting, while Russian sources said enhanced cooperation in the economic, technical and military fields were discussed.

    Russia reaffirmed its support to a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem through negotiations on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions, while President Clerides expressed his gratitude for Russia's steady support and invited Putin to visit Cyprus, an invitation the Russian President has accepted.

    [02] EU senior official - Visit

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - The European Union's top official dealing with Cyprus' accession negotiations, Leopold Maurer, arrives here next week to press on with the government matters pertaining harmonisation process.

    Competition, transport, energy and free movement of capital and services will be the focus of discussions Maurer will have with Cyprus' chief negotiator George Vassiliou and other officials.

    [03] Attorney General - Peace talks - Interview

    By Maria Myles Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - The top legal adviser to the government appears pessimistic about the prospects of next week's UN-led peace talks that there will be concrete progress towards a settlement, given the continuing stance of the Turkish side.

    Attorney General Alecos Markides stresses the need for the Greek Cypriot side to stick to fundamental principles and notes that the US and Britain, working on the fringes of the talks, have not as yet translated their role into a specific gesture.

    Temperature: maximum inland (32-34)C, Mininmum (20-22)C maximum on coast (30-32)C, minimum (20-22)C

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 11/9/2000 to 12/9/2000

    The weather will be mainly fine. Temperature expected to increase.

    [05] Cyprus Rally - Subaru Impreza WRC

    by Riana Magidou Limassol, Sep 7 (CNA) -- The view that the Cyprus Rally has future in the World Championship's calendar has been expressed by both drivers of the Subaru Impreza WRC Team participating in the three-day event due to start tomorrow morning from this southern coastal town of Cyprus.

    Speaking to CNA, team's driver, Richard Burns, from Britain, currently second in the World Championship, said that although Cyprus has a few things in common with Greece's Akropolis Rally, its special stages are rocky and twisty, placing it as unique in the world Championship calendar.
