Republican Turkish Party - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) - Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party, said today that the new climate outside the island is positive for finding a Cyprus settlement, adding that he did not see any reason why a federation solution could not be achieved.

Invited to comment on the fourth round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, scheduled to begin September 12 in New York, Talat said "we want of course to find a quick solution to the Cyprus problem, so we have to be hopeful for this new round".

Movement of Socialdemocrats - Occupied areas - Letters

Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) - President of the Movement of Socialdemocrats, Vassos Lyssarides, has denounced "the undisguised and fascist deprivation of the Turkish Cypriots' rights with the proclamation of a 'state of siege' in the occupied part of Cyprus and the proposed imposition of martial law", in letters to the Leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Party of European Socialists, Enrique Baron Crespo, and the President of the Party of European Socialists, Rudolf Scharping.

In his letters to the two Socialist leaders, Lyssarides notes that "these decisions of the all powerful National Security Agency in Ankara, not only prove the total dependence of the Denktash (Turkish Cypriot leader) regime on Turkey, but they also demonstrate Ankara's intention to neutralise and totally silence the Turkish Cypriots who massively and increasingly rise against Turkish occupation and dictatorship." Greek and Turkish Cypriot business people - Meeting

Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) - As Greek and Turkish Cypriot people have separate meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Rauf Denktash this week, the government notes that this second track diplomacy is universally acceptable but is no substitute to government policy on the political question in Cyprus.

"The government has given its consent and expressed moral support to these efforts by the Brussels group, which is an independent team and does not implement government policy nor does it draft out policy," Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, commenting on yesterday's meeting of about 20 Greek and Turkish Cypriot business people with Denktash.

Nicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) - Cyprus Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said today that no special campaign was needed on behalf of the Greek Cypriot side to indicate that Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, acts and operates as a proxy of Ankara, as "all foreigners are aware of this".
