    [03] Spokesman - Cyprus question

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) - The Cyprus government is making a concerted effort to secure that next month's UN-led proximity talks are substantive negotiations as it believes that the preparatory period is over.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou described September's new round of talks as "significant" also noting this marks the end of the intervention by US President Bill Clinton.

    [04] Finance Minister - Money laundering - Sunday Times

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) - Cyprus has stringent legislation and strict monitoring bodies to oversee and control attempts for money laundering, Finance Minister Takis Klerides has said, fending off critical press allegations that Cyprus is one of four offshore havens where Yugoslav money was said to be laundered by Belgrade.

    "International organisations have said that Cyprus' legislation satisfies their rules fully and our special unit in charge of combatting money laundering is determined to continue its close monitoring and stringent regulations in cooperation with the Central Bank and the ministry," Klerides said.

    [05] Spokesman - Turkish occupied property - Foreign buyers

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) - Anybody buying, through illegal means, Greek Cypriot property, under Turkish occupation for the past 26 years in the northern part of the island, should know they will not be able to keep it, the government stressed here today.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the government will not condone under any circumstances such purchases.

    [06] Spokesman - EU - Turkey

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) - The government believes that the Cyprus question should be incorporated in Turkey's parternship agreement with the European Union, spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    "The problem should be part of Turkey's relations with the EU and Ankara must make commitments with specific obligations regarding the Cyprus issue, " Papapetrou said.

    [07] House President - Russia - Condolences

    Nicosia, Au 22 (CNA) - The House of Representatives has expressed "deepest sympathy" for the tragic loss of life as a result of the sinking of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk.

    "It is with immense regret that I wish to express, on behalf of the members of the Cyprus House of Representatives and myself, feelings of deep sorrow for the tragic loss of life during the unfortunate incident that has struck the Russian Navy," a message of condolences by House President Spyros Kyprianou said.

    [08] Greece Ambassador - Statement

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) - Greece and Cyprus maintain very close and valuable cooperation on the political level and this should be preserved, Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Kyriakos Rodousakis has said.

    The Ambassador, whose term in office in Cyprus ends shortly, also said Greece backs President Glafcos Clerides in the positions he outlines at the UN-led peace talks, due to resume in New York in early September.
