    [01] Security Council - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- The Security Council has urged all concerned on Cyprus to "continue working for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem".

    It said it is looking forward to the continuation of the proximity talks, scheduled to restart in Geneva next month.

    [02] Cyprus - Foreign trade statistics

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- European Union countries topped the list of Cyprus domestic exports during the first quarter of the year, reaching 29 million Cyprus pounds. (one Cyprus pound = 1.63 US dollars)

    According to the main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-March 2000, during the first quarter of 2000 European Union countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at 274,8 million pounds or 54,1 per cent. At the same time, EU countries absorbed 29 m. or 51,8 per cent of domestic exports, followed by Arab countries with 24,0 per cent or 13,4 m.

    [03] President Clerides - British envoy

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today had a 90-minute meeting with Britain's envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay, here for discussions ahead of the Cyprus proximity talks scheduled to begin in Geneva on July 5.

    Sir David refrained from speaking to the press after the meeting, in line with a request by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for a news blackout during this new effort that got underway last December for a settlement in Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- According to the Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport, the weather forecast for Cyprus is:

    Friday and Saturday : 09/06/2000 to 10/06/2000

    The weather will be fine and mostly clear. Winds moderate sea breezes and the state of sea will be slight to moderate.

    Maximum temperature 34C inland and around 28C over coast. Minimum temperature around 19C.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday 11/06/2000 to 12/06/2000

    Mainly fine but locally partly cloudy with risk of local showers inland and over mountains, in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to increase by a couple of degrees.

    [05] Cyprus - British diplomat - Murder - Athens

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has condemned the murder of the military attache of the British embassy in Athens, stressing such actions serve no purpose but on the contrary they create problems for Greece.

    "The government condemns the terrorist attack which killed the British military attache in Athens. Such acts serve no purpose but on the contrary they create problems and expose Greece," Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today. (CNA/EC/MM/GP/2000)

    [06] Cyprus - President - British envoy

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) - Preparations in view of next month's UN-led talks and developments in the Cyprus question were at the core of today's discussions President Glafcos Clerides and British envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay had, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    Pointing out that this kind of discussions are no substitute for the UN talks, Papapetrou said Britain continues to back substantive negotiations with a view to open the way for a resolution of the problem, something which so far has not happened in the first two rounds of talks in December and February.

    [07] AKEL General Secretary - Holger

    Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) - Former Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary- General in Cyprus, James Holger, was hopeful here today that the Cyprus problem would be solved soon, but noted that there were some obstacles.

    Speaking after a meeting with left-wing AKEL party General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, Holger noted AKEL's efforts for rapprochement between the two communities and said that with Christofias "we have had a very good personal and professional relationship since we first met."
