    [02] British EuroMP - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) - British Labour Party European Parliament MP, Mary Honeyball, said today that Turkey's European Union accession course could be helpful towards solving the Cyprus problem and expressed the view that efforts to achieve a settlement are on the right track.

    In an interview with London Greek Radio (LGR), Honeyball said "we are talking about it (Cyprus problem) in the Parliament (European) and in the parliamentary committee with the Cyprus parliament and that is actually very important as far as membership of the European Union is concerned".

    [04] Spokesman - Greek beauty queen - Greece - Occupied Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) - Cyprus and Greece have criticized the participation of a Greek beauty queen in a contest in Turkish occupied Cyprus, stressing this was a private affair.

    They also pointed out that "Miss Greece" Katerina Delli has violated the laws of the Republic of Cyprus by entering the country illegally and recklessly allowed the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in northern occupied Cyprus to exploit her presence there.

    [05] British envoy - Arrival

    Larnaca, Jun 7 (CNA) -- Britain's Cyprus envoy Sir David Hannay, who arrived here today for a series of meetings, said one of his objectives is to prepare the ground for next month's UN-led talks in Geneva.

    Refraining from any comment on the content of his discussions, Hannay said he will meet President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and others.

    [06] Justice Ministry - Women's rights

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) - Vice Chairman of the Cyprus National Machinery for Women's Rights of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, Permanent Secretary Lazaros Savvides, said that Cyprus has made progress in promoting women's rights, in relation to the commitments the country undertook at the Beijing Conference.

    Speaking yesterday at the 23rd Special Session of the General Assembly "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century", which ended today at the UN headquarters, Savvides said that "the government of Cyprus remains strongly committed to the pursuit of further policies and programmes promoting legal and real equality between women and men".

    [07] Cyprus - Turkey - European Court

    Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) – The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has asked the secretariat to draft a second interim resolution in connection with Turkey's refusal to comply with a European Court judgment relating to human rights violations in Cyprus.

    The discussion on the execution of the Court ruling in the case of Titina Loizidou will continue in mid July, when the Committee is expected to examine the draft resolution, set to be written in a stronger language than an October resolution.
