    [01] Cyprus - Miss Universe 2000

    By Demetra Molyva Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- Miss India, Lara Dutta, early this morning was crowned Miss Universe 2000 during the 49th Miss Universe pageant held in Cyprus and aired live by CBS to 1,5 m viewers in the US and Latin America from Eleftheria stadium, in the capital Nicosia.

    The 21-year-old economist from Bangalore was crowned by Miss Universe 1999, Miss Botswana Mpule Kwalagobe.

    [02] New UN Envoy in Cyprus named

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) - Former Polish U.N Representative Zbigniew Wlosowicz will take up the post of Acting U.N. Special Representative in Cyprus and UNFICYP Chief of Mission, when the term of the incumbent James Holger of Chile expires on May 31, it was officially announced Friday.

    UN spokesman Fred Eckhard told his daily briefing that the Secretary- General has asked his Special Advisor for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto to remain based at UN Headquarters for the time being, "in order to give priority to the good offices effort underway".

    [03] Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties - Joint declaration

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) - The Greek Cypriot United Democrats (UD) party and the Turkish Cypriot Patriotic Unity Movement (PUM) have expressed their support to a federal solution in Cyprus, as stipulated for in UN resolutions and two agreements reached between the two sides in the 1970s, safeguarding the basic rights and freedoms of all citizens.

    Delegations of the two parties headed by UD Deputy President, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and PUM General Secretary Izet Izcan met today at the UD offices in Nicosia, while earlier they visited President Glafcos Clerides at the private clinic in Nicosia where he is recovering from an operation to remove a polyp from his large intestine.
