    [01] President Clerides - Egyptian President

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mohammed Hosni Mubarak sent best wishes for a speedy recovery to President Glafcos Clerides, recuperating at a private clinic after an operation to remove a polyp from his large intestine, "in order to continue serving the friendly people of Cyprus".

    The message was conveyed by Egyptian Ambassador to Cyprus Omar Metwally and President Clerides asked the Ambassador to convey his thanks and appreciation to his Egyptian counterpart.

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- A team from the International Monetary Fund is in Cyprus to review economic developments and study the economic prospects.

    The visit, to be completed by Tuesday 23 May, is part of the routine consultations IMF officials have with member-states.

    [05] US naval ships - visit

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- Two US naval ships are visiting Cyprus today on a routine visit, the US embassy has announced.

    USS Cape St. George, a 174.5 metre Guided Missile Cruiser, and the US NS Big Horn, a 207 metre Oiler, arrive at Limassol port today.

    [06] President - Health Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides is expected to leave hospital early next week, after doctors give him the all clear.

    The President, who underwent surgery to remove a polyp from his large intestine, is due to be discharge on Tuesday or Wednesday after nearly two weeks in the private clinic "Evangelistria" here.

    [07] Foreign Minister - British Foreign Secretary

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA)-- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides leaves Sunday for London where on Tuesday he is scheduled to have a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

    Kasoulides is also due to have talks with Britain's envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay, who has recently visited Athens for talks with the Greek government.

    [08] House President - Israeli ambassador

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- Plans for an official visit by House President Spyros Kyprianou to Israel were part of the discussions he had today with Israeli ambassador Shemi Tzur.

    They also talked about developments in the region and Kyprianou briefed Tzur about the Cyprus question while Tzur informed the House President about the Middle East peace process.

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- The health of former Cyprus President George Vasiliou, who had a benign brain tumour removed earlier this week, is improving steadily at a relatively fast pace.

    Vasiliou, who had the emergency surgery Wednesday, is up and about, has walked and is taking solid food.

    [10] New Commander - National Guard

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- The new Commander of the National Guard Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis said his primary goal is to increase the capabilities of the National Guard so that the Republic's armed forces will fulfill their role as this is defined by the Constitution.

    Florakis conveyed the support of Greece to this objective, and vowed to work with all his strength to prove worthy of the trust shown to him.
